This all may seem little bit technical, but we are assured that RSS is "The next big thing"!
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. The emphasis being on the Simple part. Some people also say that it stands for Rich Site Summary, but what it stands for is not too important, it's what it does that matters.
To complicate things further sometimes RSS is called XML or Atom, these are the file types of the RSS files, but you don't need to know that, infact you can forget all about the name RSS too, because thankfully there's a standard icon that's being used throughout the World Wide Web:

Even if you don't see this exact icon, you should see something with the same funky orange colour showing that you can subscribe to the page.
Basically what RSS means is a new way to get at information and news updates all in one place. Pretty much like your bookmark/favourites list.
Many of us read blogs, or articles or the news online. Some of them we check daily for updates. If they have a feed, which is a list of of headlines, summaries and links that're updated on a regular basis, you can subscribe to it.
So your favourite author writes a new book, or a pop star releases a new album, maybe your relative posts picture of their newborn on their blog, or World changing news happens. Well with RSS you will know about it instantly.
So if you see this:
on a website, this means that you can subscribe to the content of that site.

How do you get started? Easy!
You can either download a free RSS Reader first. This is special software that reads the RSS feeds. There are loads of these programs on the net, but here are two popular ones:
Windows -- RssReader
http://www.rssreader.com/
Mac -- NetNewsWire
http://ranchero.com/netnewswire/
Once you're set up, here's all you have to do...
Right-click (control-click for Mac users) on any orange RSS button on a site, blog or news source that interests you. Start by right-clicking on the orange button below.
Select Copy Shortcut ("Copy Link to Clipboard" for Mac, "Copy Link Location" for Firefox browsers), and paste that URL into your RSS Reader.
And that's it! You're subscribed.
Right-click and get started.
